Once Youve Got the Job, Start Managing Your Career
Once Youve Got the Job, Start Managing Your CareerOnce Youve Got the Job, Start Managing Your CareerOnce Youve Got the Job, Start Managing Your CareerIf you just graduated from college, youve probably been focusing your energy on your job search, and not on where youd like to be in your career in 5, 10, 20, or even 40 years. But after you land that first job is a good time to start managing your career. Shocking as that may seem to you today, its true if you think about where you are now and where youd like to be in the future. For many of you, the long-term career goal you have in your mind will change, probably more than once. Youll uncover likes and dislikes about work and your skills. You may question your values and take your career in a new direction to match those values. And changes in your home life may dictate changes in your career aspirations. As you continue down your career path, follow these three things that can help you manage your career while you gain experience(1)Ke ep a career journal update it regularly, and review it from time to time. This may seem a bit tedious, but continually updating a career journal, or diary, with your accomplishments and private thoughts about your job and your workplace, can be a big help when its time to update your resume and measure your attitude. If, for example, your most recent entries exhibit a negative attitude about your job or company, it might indicate that you should look for a new job.(2)Network online and offline.Get to know people in your industry and any industry you may want to switch to in the future. Online networking sites such as LinkedIn make this easier today. And, joining networking groups and industry associations will offer you additional chances to meet like-minded professionals in person, especially those who have more experience in your chosen field and would be happy to guide you in the early stages of your career. But be equally willing and able to help others networking works best when its a two-way street.(3)Always sense the climate in your company or industry.Be aware of the financial health and long-term outlook for your company and industry. If you hear a lot of grumbling within the company after a long period of relative happiness, it might indicate the start of harder times (or that you work with people who thrive on being miserable). If you see a downturn in your company that mirrors whats happening in your industry, and you dont see a turnaround in the future, ask yourself if its in your best interest to change jobs, careers, or industries. If youre newly employed in your first job post-graduation, congratulations If youre still looking for that first big break, keep plugging away at your job search. But once youre at that first job, you need to work hard, make a valuable contribution, and learn all you can. The more you evaluate your own situation, build professional relationships, and keep track of the changes in your field, the better you can prepare yo urself for the future.

How to Become a Crime Scene Investigator
How to Become a Crime Scene InvestigatorHow to Become a Crime Scene InvestigatorIn any criminal case, the most important part of asuccessful prosecution is the evidence presented.Witness testimonies are great, well-written reports are a must, and the ability to use investigative skills to piece together the puzzle and solve the crime is vital. No matter how skilled a detective or investigator is in making the case, though, shes ultimately only as good as the evidence she can collect. If youve got an eye for detail and want to be the difference-maker in criminal cases, youll want to know how to become a crime scene investigator. Crime scene investigators collect and gather evidence at crime scenes. Theyre responsible for preserving the evidence and transporting it to the laboratory for analysis or the evidence locker for safekeeping. They may also provide laboratory assistance and analysis, depending on their role in theiremploying agency. They work in the field and respond tocrime scen es that may range from mundane to gruesome, and are subject to call out at any time. Crime scene investigation is a fascinating career, but it is certainly bedrngnis for the faint of heart.CSIs can expect to absprache with all manner of bodily fluids and biological substances, including blood, saliva, feces, and even semen.A strong stomach is a must. Before you get too excited, realize that working as a crime scene investigator isnt quite like what you see on TV in shows like CSI.Its nowhere near as dramatic or glamorous, and while crimes seem to get solved in an hour on television, the truth is they often take days, weeks or even months to get all of the evidence gathered and analyzed to prepare a warrant for arrest, much less get a conviction. There is a growing interest in all sorts of careers in forensic science, but the magic of television and movies have led to particularly increased attention and popularity of CSI careers, especially civilian careers in criminal justice and c riminology. What that means for anyone who wants to work as a crime scene tech is that youll need to do your part to make yourself stand out when you hit the job market. Requirements for Crime Scene Investigators Most criminal justice agencies use sworn crime scene investigators, meaning that in many cases youll need to become a versicherungsschein officer before you can work as a CSI.Generally, the minimum qualifications to become a police offer require you to Be a U.S. CitizenHold a valid driver licenseBe at least 19 years old, and often 21 years or olderHave no prior convictions or arrests for felonies, domestic violence or serious misdemeanorsHave a high school diploma or GEDHave a minimum of two years public contact work experience, prior law enforcement tafelgeschirr or military service Keep in mind that these are the minimum requirements for work as a police officer just meeting these will not guarantee employment in law enforcement, much less work as a crime scene invest igator, but if you dontat least meet these, you wont have a shot at getting hired. Civilian crime scene investigators must meet similar qualifications however, the job market is even tougher, so there will be a greater emphasis on education and experience than there may be for their sworn CSI counterparts. Landing a job as a crime scene investigator takes training, practice, and experience. As law enforcement specialty positions, candidates will usually need to work the streets as a patrol officer for a year or more before they can be considered for transfer to a special detail or job. During that time, youll want to hone the skills you learned in the police academy, particularly those that relate to criminal investigations such as lifting fingerprints, identifying and documenting evidence, and diagraming crime scenes. For non-sworn positions, you can gain experience through internships and forensicscience and crime scene investigation certificate programs.Youll also very likely spen d time apprenticing with an experienced investigator at the start to get valuable on-the-job training. A Sparse Career Field Crime scene investigators work on the front lines of forensic science to gather and collect evidence from crimes. While a lot of people tend to focus their studies on criminal justice, criminology or a generalized forensic science degree, the truth is that the emphasis in forensic science should be on the science, not the forensics. While a degree is not necessarily required for CSI careers, you cant underestimate the benefits of a college education. If youre really interested in working as a crime scene investigator, youll need to have a solid background in the sciences to understand the science behind evidence collection and to have a better understanding of where to find evidence, what to collect and how to analyze it. A degree in any of the natural sciences, such as physics, biology or chemistry will give you the foundational knowledge youll need to get started. With a major in natural science, youll also want to get a background in the criminal justice process, as well as knowledge of how and why crime is committed and how it is investigated. Take courses in criminal justice, criminology and forensics, and consider minoring or earning a double major in one of thesefields.By doing so, youll develop the keen scientific mind and the knack for criminalistics youllneed for a successful crime scene investigator career. Skills Youll Need to Succeed Crime scene investigators need to be, in a sense, a jack of all trades. You need a range of skills to be an effective CSI, including photography, computer skills, and a detail-oriented mind. Since youll be working closely with detectives and investigators, youll also need strong communication skills and the ability to speak and write clearly. You can also expect to be called to give courtroom testimony, so youll need to be able to answer questions clearly and concisely and be able to curb yo ur nerves. Background Investigations for Crime Scene Investigators Whether or not crime scene investigators are sworn police officers, they will be dealing with sensitive information and working closely with law enforcement officers.Evidence collection and preservation is an incredibly important job that requires a high level of trust. In light of this fact, a thorough background investigation will be required that will include looking into your previous employmentand any criminal history you may haveand may include a polygraph exam, a psychological evaluation, and a physical fitness assessment. Training for Crime Scene Investigators ?Depending on the state, jurisdiction or even agency that you want to work for, you may need to attend a crime scene investigation academy or receive specialized training in evidence collection and preservation. Or, you may simply receive on-the-job training as you apprentice with other experienced investigators. For holding any swornpositions, youl l need to attend a police academy and take and pass a state certification exam.In the academy, youll learn about various crimes, what sort of evidence to look for and how to properly identify, document and collect it. Becoming a Crime Scene Investigator With the increased interest in all forensic careers, becoming a crime scene investigator is not an easy prospect.Youll face competition in the job market, and youll need to be patient as you work toward your goals, especially if you have to become a police officer first. For those with an analytical mind and a knack for fine detail, working as a crime scene investigator is an excellent opportunity to apply your skills and interests in an interesting and exciting criminology career.

If your boss does these 3 things, they have a personal problem with you
If your babo does these 3 things, they have a personal problem with youIf your babo does these 3 things, they have a personal problem with youPlenty of professionals at all levels have walked away from a less-than-perfect conversation with their supervisors believing that their baboes must have problems with them on a personal level. She obviously hates me, your subconscious may scream after your babo rejects a proposed use ofPTO, forgets to ask you to sign the CEOs birthday card, or puts you in the hot seat during a project meeting. However, these perceived slights generally stem from a hectic work schedule, stress in your bosss personal life, or - in the worst-case scenarios - an issue with your professional performance. But what if you suspect that your boss just straight-up doesnt like you? In many cases, these fears can be dispelled by observing your bosss behavior toward your colleagues. Is she generally inclined to dismiss people, to avoid conversations about tricky work subj ects, or to dodge mentions of future advancement for her employees? If thats the case, the issue lies with her personalmanagementstyle, not with any singular dislike for you. But if shes warm, open, and helpful with your coworkers but not with you, its possible that your personalities just dont click.Below, weve listed 3 signs that indicate that your boss just isnt that into you - and what you can do about it.1. Your boss goes out of her way to avoid you.Of course, an effective manager should strive to remain open and communicative to all members of her team, regardless of her personal feelings about them. And if an employees work performance is causing issues for the team as a whole, its a managers literal responsibility to address those problems and put the employee on an improvement plan. However, in practice, supervisors often take extraordinary steps to avoid one-on-one conversations with the employees whose performance is just fine, but whose company they dont particularly en joy.If you notice your boss making herself scarce when you swing by her office to ask a question or constantly postponing scheduled check-ins or reviews, it may be your boss not-so-subtly indicating that shed rather not spend any extra time with you. However, you probably still need to talk to your boss to get your job done, so theres no need to take these behaviors lying down.According to career expert Alison Green of Ask a Manager, approaching your boss with a positive vibe and a direct message can cut throughcommunicationsnafus, whether the issues are performance-based orpersonality-based. If you need your bosss attention stat, Greenadvises the following approachYou could say something like this I found it really helpful when we had regular weekly meetings in the past. Weve stopped doing them as frequently, and when we do them, its often at the very end of the week and we run out of time to titel everything. I often run into situations where I need your feedback, and it can be to ugh to wait as long as weve been waiting. Would you be open to meeting weekly again, and trying to do those meetings at a regular time that we can both plan around? You could also ask something like this Is there a better way for me to get ahold of you when youre busy and I need something that shouldnt wait until our one-on-one? Typically Ive tried messaging or calling, but I know youre busy and cant always respond right away. When somethings time-sensitive, whats the best way for me to get ahold of you?2. Your boss uses negativebody languagearound you.Its easy to dismiss body language as New Age-y and unimportant, but the way you use your physicality to interact with others often speaks louder than any words can do. Bosses who dont personally like you can frequently mask their distaste in their spoken dialogue and their written communications, but sometimes have more trouble policing their bodys movements, gestures, and positioning.Business author and speaker Michael Kerrput it like this Whether its a subtle eye roll, constantly assuming a closed off position with arms folded across their chest, or they dont look up from their computer screen when you enter their office, your boss body language will often reveal their true feelings towards you.The best way to handle negative body language from your supervisor involves leading by example. Respond with positive and friendly body language, including direct eye contact, and an open stance. Avoiding the urge to fight fire with fire will reflect well on you and, because people engaged in conversation so often emulate each others body language, you may manage to inspire your manager to open up her own physicality in a convivial way.3. She doesnt display consideration for your well-being.When you call out sick at work, does your boss stop by your desk upon your return to ask how youre feeling? After youve completed a difficult and time-consuming work project, does your boss give you any time to decompress before loadi ng you up again? If youve experienced the death of a loved one and explained the situation to your boss, does she offer her sincere condolences? If the answer to any or all of these is No, youre probably dealing with a personality clash between yourself and your supervisor.Dr. Amy Cooper Hakim of management consulting firm The Cooper Strategic Grouptold Business Insiderthat If your boss keeps you overburdened and never attempts to work around your conflicts, these are surefire signs that your boss doesnt care about how you feel, physically or emotionally, and only cares about things directly related to work. Its not your bosss job to be your friend, but they should still care about your wellbeing. If youre dealing with a boss like this, your best course of action is to stand your ground and advocate for yourself. If youve been sick and your boss instantly tries to drop a dozen new projects on your desk upon your return, tell her firmly and clearly that you need time to re-acclimate, but that you can take on X number of new projects immediately. Respond with a strong sense of your own boundaries, but also propose a compromise, and youll still come out looking like a team player.

How to Deal With a Yelling Boss
How to Deal With a Yelling BossHow to Deal With a Yelling BossWhen fruchtwein of us are asked to picture ur ideal workplace it most likely features a supportive cast of professional colleagues who pitch in, collaborate and communicate with ease. Dont get us wrong. That mental image is certainly a great aspiration for the place youll end up spending more time than your actual home on a daily basis, but reality has a way of looking just a little bit different.Chances are that if youve spent enough time in the workforce youll encounter a slightly more difficult environment. Maybe your support crew of workmates spends more time reading the SimplyHired blog than actually working. In most instances, your boss choosing to yell probably isnt rolleal. Many managers or employees with authority came up during an age when less professional standards were applied to workplace behavior. This certainly doesnt make yelling something that should be accepted, but it may help lessen the stress you feel daily wondering just what it is the yeller has against you. With this in mind, whatever action you choose to take to help address a yelling boss, its best leid to confront them directly with counter-aggression. Answering yelling with more yelling will just increase your office stress and can often be misconstrued as bad behavior on your part, especially if the person doing the screaming doesnt realize they are in the wrong. Take a crack at walking in your boss shoes, then move on to one of our handy methods for management and correction below.Suggested Approaches for Dealing With a Yelling BossOur steps below are meant to be guidelines and tips for dealing with inappropriate communications. While they may not fit your specific scenario, weve tried to order them in the level of progression, escalating in the seriousness of response to help keep the workplace as happy and healthy as possible.Talk to Your BossThis may not be right for every scenario, but if you encounter a boss who yells in some circumstances but is completely normal and professional in others, a heart to heart may be in order. Plan your discussion out ahead of time and be sure to include specific instances of bad behavior and how it impacted you and your work performance. With any luck, this direct approach will have an otherwise reasonable supervisor rethinking his or her behavior and perhaps respecting your position more given y our willingness to communicate.Reach out to Other ManagersIf your boss is a yeller it may be a good idea to get the lay of the land on how others behave within your workplace. Developing good relationships with others in leadership positions will help you assess whether the yelling is an instance of a single bad apple or indicative of an overall workplace culture. Be careful not to bad mouth your current boss, but if you do manage to develop a solid repertoire, feel free to drop in your current supervisors behavior in casual conversation. Getting a talking to by someone senior within the company may be the correction needed to help put an end to loud and angry speeches. Pay a Visit to HR As a last resort, you may need to be prepared to file a report directly with Human Resources regarding your boss unreasonable behavior. If youre considering this route, be cautious that youve exhausted your professional means of addressing the situation first. If you feel that your work environment has become toxic, however, and you dont have the tools needed to address the situation, seek out your HR department for an official report or even informal advice to avoid undue suffering. If All Else FailsThere may come a time when your best efforts at correcting a yelling boss may fail. If the screaming has reached a level where youre stomach is in knots over the mere idea of coming into the office, it may be time to seek alternative employment. Leaving a bad working environment is never the wrong decision. If youre worried about the resignation having a negative impact on your future prospects, be prepared to explain the situation to future hiring managers or interviewers in as professional a manner as possible. Above all else, make sure your exit is graceful. Maintaining the upper hand in professionalism and being able to hold your head high as you walk away from a toxic, yelling boss will protect you both in work and personally in the future.
